Film is a term that encloses individual motion photos, the sector of Movie as a kind of art, and the motion picture industry. Movies are produced by recording photographs from the world with cameras, or by making pictures using animation methodologies or special effects.

Pictures are cultural artifacts made by particular cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Picture is believed to be a crucial art form, a reliable source of popular entertainment and a forceful system for educating — or indoctrinating — citizens. The visible components of theatre gives motion photographs a universal power of communication. Some flicks have grown increasingly popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue.

Normal Movies are made up of a collection of individual pictures called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is happening. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as endurance of vision, whereby the eye keeps a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Spectators understand motion thanks to a mental effect called beta movement.

The origin of the name “Movie” comes from the incontrovertible fact that photographic Film (also called Film stock) had traditionally been the most important medium for recording and showing motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, photo-play, flick, and most widely, motion picture. Further terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema, and the films.

In the 1860s, mechanisms for making artificially created, 2-dimensional images in motion were demonstrated with devices eg the zoetrope and the praxinoscope. These machines were outgrowths of straightforward optical devices (such as sorcery lanterns) and would display sequences of still footage at adequate speed for the photographs on the photos to seem to be moving, a phenomenon called endurance of vision. Naturally, the pictures wanted to be fastidiously designed to achieve the required effect — and the underlying principle became the base for the development of Picture animation.

With the development of celluloid Movie for still photography, it became possible to at once capture objects in motion in real time. Early versions of the technology sometimes needed a person to have a look at a viewing machine to see the footage which were separate paper prints attached to a drum turned by a handcrank. The pictures were shown at a variable speed of approximately 5 to 10 footage per second dependent on how rapidly the crank was turned. A few of these machines were coin operated. By the 1880s, the development of the motion picture camera permitted the individual part photographs to be captured and stored on a single reel, and led quickly to the development of a motion picture projector to polish light thru the processed and outlined Motion picture and magnify these “moving picture shows” onto a screen for a complete audience. These reels, so exhibited, came to be known as “motion pictures”. Early motion pictures were static shots that showed an event or action with no revising or other cinematic methods.

A film or pelicula in spanish is a cinematic masterpiece that emits an audio visual history through a sequence of images, with or without sound, and usually based on a script, in which the characters may or may not be played by actors. There is no distinction involve with images either printed or in television because of the sensitive material as it could be a movie theater, a television or computer.

From a technical standpoint, a film is a sequence of images shot with a camera, and reproduced by a movie projector, using an image replacement rate above 18 frames per second, so that it creates in the human eye the illusion of continuity with no delay between each frame due to retinal persistence.

Phases of a film

There are three phases of a film. There is pre-production, production which mainly includes the filming and lastly post-production. To some extent, the producer is in charge of preproduction, the director of the shoot, and post-production editor, but this is relative, according to the creativity and personality of the most important producer and director. Sometimes either monitor each step of making a film.
Pre-production

This phase includes all preparations, from locating sources of funding to the selection of locations, not to mention the casting. You can start with a simple idea (this is required since the preparation of preliminary script), or from a novel, a former film production, and even a television series.

Production

Employs a film sound engineers, cameramen, set designers, lighting technicians, sound technicians, makeup artists, dressmakers, hairdressers, pointers and secretaries, among many others, besides acting staff. During this period, the principal struggle between the demands imposed by a budget and schedule, and the conflicts of the mix of individuals. It is important to consider that any decision will have a cost that will return profits (at the box office) or cause an expense (during filming).

Being responsible for the process, the director must delegate a large number of functions and yet answer for all.

Post-Production

Much of the special effects are included in the tape during the filming itself, such as the effect of the action scenes created by moving cameras (in the interstellar battles of Star Wars, the models remained fixed while the cameras were moved to him).

However, other effects are added during post-production, and for example are the result of model animation frame by frame, or overlays, or computer animation, among many others.

At this stage, the final results are in the hands of the publisher who must give meaning and coherence to hundreds of meters of film, select frames, and even ask for the repetition of certain scenes.

A range of movie releases have been looked out this week from the disturbing to the entertaining to the downright baffling.

Frank Piasecki Poulsen’s extraordinarily courageous documentary film ‘Blood in the Mobile’ was shocking and unsettling. The shocking story of atrocities linked to the mining of materials used by huge mobile phone corporations were brought to life by the fearless Danish film-maker who risked his life in the process.

‘The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn’ remains faithful to the original story, but certainly has the Steven Spielberg stamp on it. The film still features the adventures of the recognisable ripping boy, but throws in beautiful semi-human CGI animation and plenty of action-movie sequences.

The new film by George Clooney is ‘The Ides of March’, which is a fine political thriller directed, co-produced and co-adapted by the man himself. The main role however, is taken by Ryan Gosling who plays Stephen Mayers as the ambitious and opportunistic young press secretary working on his campaign. Ambition, loyalty, guilt and political chicanery make up this complex story that is brilliantly acted throughout.

Delivering on several levels, is Lionel Shriver’s bestselling novel ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’, the much-anticipated adaptation by Lynne Ramsay. The subject matter is dealt with imaginatively and with a deft hand and the story packs a hefty emotional punch. Director Ramsay lives up to the promise she’s shown in her earlier films, imbuing this horrific tale with audacious style and a bleak kind of beauty.

Nagisa Ôsima’s Seventies art-house takes on sex and violence, ‘In the Realm of the Senses’ and ‘Empire of Passion’ still managed to shock in this week’s DVD releases. Entirely mystifying and experimental, almost to the point of parody however was Miklós Jancsó’s inscrutable Seventies art-house take on 19th century revolution, ‘Red Psalm’.

The critics at The Arts Desk have released a new batch of film reviews this week after viewing a range of interesting movies.

The best and most political action film of the year is José Padilha’s Brazilian blockbuster ‘Elite Squad: The Enemy Within’. Encompassing endemic corruption of every kind from drugs to riots to protection rackets, the film follows the elite Rio police force, led by Captain Nascimento (Wagner Moura), through personal and political tensions. It’s gripping from the off, fast-paced and energetic, and boasts some superb lead performances.

‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ is Hollywood’s latest take on the asci-fi staple, set in modern San Francisco. A super-intelligent simian is accidently created by James Franco’s scientist who is working on a cure for Alzheimer’s, which soons leads to a full-scale ape rebellion against humans. The high-tech motion-capture effects are impressive, but the plot is a clunky mixture of sci-fi tropes and left Adam Sweeting feeling unimpressed.

In other movie releases, Dominic Cooper had a tough acting job in ‘The Devil’s Double’, where he played both Saddam Hussein’s depraved son Uday – a man who rapes, murders and maims at will – and Latif Yahia, the man forced to act as his official lookalike. The two characters are differentiated by Cooper as he plays Uday as the full unhinged pantomime villain, and Latif as contrastingly taciturn and stoical. The plot becomes more reliant on cliché, so gets less convincing as it goes on, and while the feel is undoubtably right, Latif is too passive and Uday seems too banal.

Pedro Costa’s study of migrant workers in Lisbon, ‘Colossal Youth’, transcended art cinema into a contemplative and realistic portrait of wounded, exiled individuals in this week’s DVD releases. Meanwhile Tom Birchenough was struck by Natalie Press’s characteristically raw performance in Elizabeth Mitchell and Brek Taylor’s beautifully shot indie film ‘Island’, adapted from Jane Rogers’s novel.

These days it is very easy to take the technology available to us for granted. We tend to forget how it improves our lives because of the fact that it is all around us. If you are a movie lover like me then you will have likely benefited greatly from the web. Up until a decade ago I’d be lucky to see a couple of movies a week on video or DVD. But these days it is possible for me to watch many different movies throughout the day and still have plenty to choose from again the next day. Because there are so many movies to choose from on the internet, I don’t think I could ever run out of choices. To be fair though, such an abundance of choice is both good and bad.

One of the negative things about all this choice is that it has taken some of the enjoyment out of watching movies if I’m honest. As the saying goes, when there is always chocolate biscuits in the jar, who wants chocolate biscuits? This applies to many situations. It is no longer special to watch a movie. I used to look forward to sitting in front of the television with the DVD I had rented. There were times when I would order in a takeaway and then invite my friends to come and watch it with me. Nowadays I just stick on a film whenever I’m bored and there is nothing special about it.

Of course the positive impact of online movies more than makes up for the negatives. There is never any excuse to be bored again. All I have to do is go on the internet to look for something to watch if I have nothing else to do. There is no need to nip to a store to rent something. It is possible for me to stream the movie to my computer so I don’t even have to wait until it downloads. It really is kind of wonderful when I think about it. Depite their being a downside to online movies, I will say that I an more than satisfied with them.

We are privileged to be able to take pleasure in such a number of things on account of the creation of the net. We can shop, you can send e-mail, we are able to find information – and much more. Probably the most favourite thing to do though is free movies online.

If you haven’t been sleeping in a cave for the last month you’ll have heard that, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’ was released this week. In the last seven days however, there have been many more movie releases that don’t involve a spectacled wizard. With a distinctly offbeat character, The Arts Desk has written a selection of film reviews, which are in stark contrast to the big-budget blockbusters.

‘Film Socialisme’ is the latest offering by 80-year-old director Jean-Luc Godard, which is as experimental and rebellious as any other film of his career. The themes of the film include Palestine, the 20th century, the Holocaust and Hollywood and focus on an ocean liner, a rural petrol station and chunks of old film. Nick Hasted believes a new younger audience will now be attracted to Godard’s films, as it was surprisingly funny.

‘Holy Rollers’ is Kevin Asch’s directorial debut, but Adam Sweeting found it to be less than the sum of its parts. A geeky Hasidic kid falls from grace in this true story, which sees him go from a claustrophobic Jewish community in Brooklyn into a money-spinning drugs racket. There was something missing from the film though according to Sweeting who believes it simply wasn’t thrilling enough.

The re-release of Alain Resnais’s ‘Last Year in Marienbad’ was seen by James Woodall this week. According to Woodall, surface and enigma took precedence over character psychology and he was not impressed with the film. The oppressively ornate voiceover was Woodall’s main objection, as it serves to distance the audience and only adds to the overall feeling of a piece of self-regarding Post-Modernism.

Offering a poetic and impressionistic quality, Terrence Malick’s ‘The Tree of Life’ was seen by Emma Simmonds. The narrative features an extraordinary digression about the creation of the universe and is perhaps an acquired taste, although it is still a spectacular vision that hasn’t been seen elsewhere this decade.
